Sr. Mary Alfred Guillard, IBVM

Fall 2019: Wabi-Sabi

Daybreak in November (from my window)

Darkness slowly, slowly disappears.
Gathering clouds reflect an array of hues
Frantically chasing each other as though from fear.
A ball of fire ascends, more brilliance infused.
Called by a violent wind, colored leaves take flight.
As flocks of geese form Southward wing.
Awe, breath-taking beauty, this magnificent sight
A glimpse of God’s eternal glory makes my heart sing.

Sr. Mary Alfred Guillard, born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has been in religious life as a member of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin May for over 70 years.  The motto on her ring is “Love Serves” and has impelled her throughout her life to be of service in whatever way was needed.  In IBVM facilities, both in Canada and the United States, she served as cook, ran the dining room, worked in the infirmary, and assisted in the Loretto Education Extension, a correspondence program for high school students.  She is also a writer; her spirit is captured beautifully in her poetry.
