As a follow up to the Addison Center for the Arts “Expressions: Art & Verse 2024,” the fourth collaboration between Illinois artists and the Illinois State Poetry Society, we are happy to show you Arlene’s Ashack’s painting “Entanglement” and the poem by Rita Yager written in response to the painting. Thank you to Rita Yager for allowing us to share her playful poem.

Entanglements, a poem by Rita Yager
Could it be that
Van Gogh sipped a bit
too much absinthe last night?
or is this just an art project using a can of silly string
maybe a blind folded toddlers
happy finger painting?
Is this a clever chefs
cooking class creation
an ingenious culinary trick
to get a finicky child
to eat pasta?
if so, what kind of sauce
would you put on it?
Perhaps the cake boss
just needed to use up
those last bowls
of leftover frostings
whatever,
this entwined rainbow
of kaleidoscopic colors
symbolizes of connections
helps us understand that
everyone can be included
on our plate of life
