Vespers for Barbara

Sr. Mary Southard is a life-adventurer fascinated by the wonder and creativity of the cosmos, most especially our Earth. Her unique art explores the great gift of existence with all its beauty and longing, its passion and mystery.

Born in Sparta, Wisconsin and raised as the oldest of five children in Cicero, Illinois, Mary entered the convent in her late teens and became a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph (CSJ) in 1954. Her love of art began to unfold in high school and bloomed as she went on to earn a B.A. in Art from Dominican University and an M.A. in Art from the University of Notre Dame.

In addition to being a professional artist, Mary is also an experienced educator, retreat director, and spiritual companion. She delights in being with others as they awaken to new dimensions of their creativity.

Mary’s art commissions and program work have taken her to many places in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Publications include a yearly art/meditation calendar currently distributed around the world, book and journal illustrations, and book cover art.

Mary lives and has her studio in the Congregation of St. Joseph La Grange Park Center, located in La Grange Park, Illinois. To learn more, visit her website at www.marysouthardart.org

  1. Thank you, your art I often meditate on and it has inspired me and helped my religious and life in general so much. My first contact was when I found Sr. Mary’s name in one of Joyce Ruppp’s books. May the Lord continue to bless you and your wonderful art. Sr. Joan
